Sensi Graves is a professional kiteboarder, entrepreneur, speaker, kiteboarding instructor and women’s empowerment coach. She has competed professionally over the last decade and regularly places in the top three at some of the biggest international kiteboarding invitationals, garners continuous coverage in kiteboarding magazines, and leads women’s kiteboarding retreats worldwide.
In 2012, Sensi launched her eponymous swimwear label, Sensi Graves Bikinis, to meet the demands of her sport (after losing one too many string bikinis in the surf, she decided to tackle the job herself and design suits that actually stay on in rough conditions).
“I design swimwear that’s made to work, whether you’re tow-surfing at Jaws or sup-ing down the river. Our core mission: to design swimwear that’s both fiercely functional and fabulously feminine so that you can feel confident and awesome.
On Starting a New Womens Surf Swimwear Company
The very first tradeshow I ever went to I was like a deer in the headlights.
There were SO many swim brands. Most of them way cooler than I was. Lots of beautiful booths, women in beautiful clothes and lots of strutting of stuff. I didn’t feel good enough to be there.
And the other women didn’t let me forget that either. I could feel their eyes judging my booth and my small line-up of suits. I felt small and insignificant as posses of well-clad ladies made their way to coffee or to lunch. I felt insecure and unincluded.
There’s much to be said for putting yourself out there but at that first tradeshow I wanted to sink beneath the floor. What was I doing? Who was I to try and start a swimwear company when all of the gorgeous women were already rocking it (and clearly didn’t want me there).
But the secret it, you offer a special sauce, a unique perspective, an individual touch. There can be a million swimwear companies out there but no one is going to offer exactly what you offer. You are different and you are gorgeous and you DESERVE to be there.
Getting over other people’s judgments and looks of disapproval and doubts wasn’t easy at first but it’s been necessary to grow and thrive as an entrepreneur and business owner.
No one should be made to feel like they’re not good enough.
But you can’t control how other people react to you, all you can is how you show up for yourself.
And the tools I’ve learned along the way are crucial for feeling stoked in the face of hard things.
