Directions to Multnomah Falls from Hood River and Portland

Multnomah Falls, Oregon’s tallest waterfall at 620 feet, is a must-visit destination in the Columbia River Gorge. Whether you’re traveling from Hood River or Portland, here’s how to reach this iconic landmark by car. Not to mention some hiking that you can do there.

From Hood River (Approximately 35 miles, 35–40 minutes)

Starting in Hood River, head west on I-84 W toward Portland. Drive about 30 miles along the Columbia River, enjoying scenic views of the gorge. Take Exit 31 for Multnomah Falls, clearly marked for the falls’ parking area. However, coming from Hood River I want to warn you that approaching Mulnomah you need to stay in the “fast lane” or left hand lane as the exit is on the left, not the right!!!!    The exit leads directly to the Multnomah Falls Lodge parking lot, where you can access the viewing areas. Be prepared for limited parking, especially on weekends, as the lot fills quickly. If the lot is full, you may need to park along the Historic Columbia River Highway (if permitted) or at nearby overflow parking and walk a short distance.  During summer months you may need a reservation not to park, but to walk to the falls.

From Portland (Approximately 30 miles, 30–35 minutes)

From downtown Portland, take I-84 E toward The Dalles. Drive approximately 30 miles through the Columbia River Gorge, following the signs for Multnomah Falls. Take Exit 31 for Multnomah Falls, which leads to the parking lot at Multnomah Falls Lodge. The drive is straightforward, but traffic can slow near the falls during peak seasons (spring and summer). Arrive early to secure parking, as spaces are limited, and consider carpooling to reduce congestion.

Tips for Both Routes

  • Best Time to Visit: Early mornings or weekdays to avoid crowds and parking issues.
  • Alternate Route: From either direction, you can take the scenic Historic Columbia River Highway (US-30) for a slower, picturesque drive, though it’s winding and may add 10–15 minutes.
  • Facilities: The Multnomah Falls Lodge offers restrooms, a visitor center, and a snack bar, although I would say when its busy the bathrooms may need some cleaning and are very crowded so be prepared!
  • Hiking: A short trail leads to the iconic Benson Bridge for a closer view, with additional trails to the top for more adventurous visitors.

Whether coming from Hood River or Portland, the drive to Multnomah Falls is a quick, scenic journey to one of Oregon’s natural treasures. Plan ahead for parking and enjoy the breathtaking views!
